It's Skin Cancer Awareness Month

I know I always preach about the need for sun protection, and if you ever wondered why, just look at this photo:

I mean, this can’t really be her skin, can it?  This is alarming for so many reasons.  But rather than alarm you with pictures of horrible skin, or how this woman allegedly put her small, fair-skinned child in a tanning bed (again, I’m hoping this is not real) I’d rather talk about some great new innovations in sun care!
There are plenty of reasons people don’t wear sun protection, from chalky textures, to breakouts, to greasy feeling or weird smelling products… but there are companies out there who are really trying to make sun protection products tolerable, and maybe even a little bit enjoyable to wear.
Here are some of my faves:

For the beach:
Australian Gold Spray Sheer Coverage Sunscreen with InivisiDry Technology ($10.99)-

This oil-free sunscreen comes in SPF 15 or 30 and leaves you feeling dry all day instead of sticky.  The trademarked InvisiDry Technology is water resistant for up to 80 minutes, won't break down in the heat, and won't have you looking all greased up in the sun.

Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration Sunscreen Lotion ($9.99)-

This latest product from Hawaiian Tropic comes in SPF 12, 30, or 50, so the strength is up to you, but whichever one you choose you'll get super hydration with silk proteins, antioxidants, and Vitamins C&E.  These ingredients moisturize and are good for skin tone over time, all packaged in that great summertime Hawaiian Tropic fragrance with broad spectrum UV protection.

For every day:
Algenist Ultra Lightweight UV Defense Fluid SPF 50 ($38)-
My really fair friends are going to appreciate this high level of SPF, but built into an extremely lightweight, oil-free, non-comedogenic formula that actually SMELLS GOOD.  Even if you're not fair I think you can appreciate all of those benefits in one formulation.  This San Francisco company uses Sea Algae in its products because of its amazing renewal properties for the skin, so you can rest assured that there are also no sulfates or synthetic dyes, so even the most sensitive skin can handle this product.

Dermalogica Oil Free Matte SPF30 ($48)-

This product has been reformulated from its original SPF20 formula, and moved into the "Medibac Clearing" group of Dermalogica products because it controls the main causes of adult acne.  That's right ladies and gents, not only will it protect you from the sun, it will also give you a matte finish instead of looking greasy, and it can help clear up your skin instead of causing breakouts like some other sunscreens can.  This product uses naturally occurring molecules from Safflower Oil to protect sun from the skin, making it possible to give you high SPF without the sensitivity-causing ingredients.

For the lips:
We can’t forget to protect the delicate skin on our lips every day!  Who wants to kiss a pair of chapped, burnt lips?  I certainly don’t.
Yes To Carrots Sweet Fig Lip Butter with SPF15 ($3.49)-

While I originally thought this was just going in my beach bag, I've found that I have this on me at all times to keep my lips moisturized with Vitamin E and Shea Butter.  It serves double duty since it has SPF in it, but I also like that it tastes good and I am not worried about ingesting any parabens, petroleum, or sulfates.

LypSyl Intense Protection LypMoisturizer in HoneyBerry ($2.99)-

This SPF15 lip moisturizer contains pure Swedish Beeswax, natural Shea & Avocado butters, coconut oil, natural HoneyBerry flavor, as well as Vitamins A & E for all-day moisture.

For post-sun skin care:
ClĂ© De Peau BeautĂ© Brightening Serum Supreme ($160)-

Always the ultimate in luxury skincare, CDP has formulated a serum to diminish the appearance of dark spots and discoloration, as well as protect against future spots.  Dark spots are an unfortunate side effect of both sun damage and age, but this serum targets those problem spots with Vitamin C, Wild Ginger Extract, and 4MSK.  The combination of these products fades existing spots and inhibits future melanin production.  But the job is not done when the dark spots have faded... this Brightening Serum Supreme is said to improve circulation, strengthen blood vessels, and brighten the skin with its signature Illuminating Complex technology, making it stand out from other serums on the market.

Ole Henriksen Truth Creme Advanced Hydration ($45)-

After sun exposure it's imperative to promote healthy cell turnover, which this product does with fruit acids (which also contain Vitamin C to help brighten).  Along with promoting cell turnover, it stimulates skin's own collagen synthesis and promotes natural hyaluronic acid production.  The key with that is it's not just applying hyaluronic acid topically, but actually encouraging your own cells to produce it.  To help the skin along a bit there are super moisturizing ingredients like sunflower, jojoba, and macadamia nut oils.

  1. I've heard my mom raving about Ole Henriksen Truth Creme Advanced Hydration and how well it goes with her skin. There are no words to describe this lady and her tanning obsession.
