New York Fashion Week: backstage at Catherine Malandrino AW2012

The look for Malandrino's AW2012 collection was inspired by the 80's film Cat People.  The interpretation is more sleek and modern, but still very sexy.  Lots of netting, vinyl, and leather give this collection an edgy feel.

Hair:
Antonio Corral Calero, Moroccanoil's artistic director, created a hair style with 2 different finishes: a wet, piecey finish towards the top, and a stick-straight, dry finish flowing down the back.  To start Calero used original Moroccanoil Treatment (or Moroccanoil Light depending on the model's hair texture) and then a little Hydrating Styling Cream on damp hair before blowing out with a large Moroccanoil Ionic Ceramic round brush.    The next step, and the key to this look, is the new Moroccanoil Volumizing Mousse that comes out in fall 2012.  The mousse was used to saturate the top and sides of the hair, and then stylists finger-combed the strands into wave patterns (almost like making tracks in the hair with your fingers).  The wave patterns were blown dry to hold the pattern in place, and lifted a little bit at the roots (especially around the crown) for volume, and the hair was sprayed with Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray all over.  Finally the hair was flat ironed in the back to create that stick-straight texture, and sprayed with Moroccanoil Glimmer Shine Spray.

Makeup:
Gilbert Soliz led the Sephora Pro Beauty Team as they gave models edgy, wet-look cat eyes to continue with the Cat People theme.  They kept the faces on the models natural looking with Laura Mercier products, using Tinted Moisturizer, Secret Camouflage wherever extra coverage was needed, and Bronzing Duo to sculpt the cheeks.  For the eyes they started with a base of MAKE UP FOR EVER Kohl Liner in Black, then made lines with Aqua Cream #20 (blue), #21 (turquoise), and #7 (fuschia).  They used Aqua Cream #4 (Snow) to create a pearlized streak just underneath the brow arch. The eye look was finished off with DiorShow Mascara in Black.

Nails:
CND created a custom color for Malandrino's collection that's a rich jewel tone with a slight pink undertone to it.  You can replicate this look at home by combining 1 layer of Plumville and a layer of Dark Ruby.  To create the high gloss finish they used 2 coats of Air Dry Topcoat to protect and give the color depth.
