Give your nail polish a makeover with a matte topcoat

Afraid to try one of the many vibrant nail colors that's in style this season? Or, if you're like myself and have way too many bottles of nail polish to justify buying another, there is a simple solution. Try a matte topcoat. This can give your nail laqcuer wardrobe a much-needed lift. You'd be surprised at what a little topcoat can do. This kind of topcoat can give light colors an interesting chalky, snow-princess effect. Glittery colors? No problem. It takes the shimmer out and gives the color a completely different feel. You'd also be shocked to see what it can do to a range of silver and gold toned nail polish. Essie makes an excellent version called "Matte About You" ($8), but there are tons of versions out there. And at the end of the day, who can't use a topcoat?

*Quick tip- If you're a frequent nail-painter, you may experience some yellowing on your nails. To get rid of this cut 2 slices of a lime. Take the juice of one slice, mix with some salt (coarse salt like Kosher or Sea Salt works the best), and scrub the mixture onto your nails with an old toothbrush. The acidic juice from the lime will take that yellow right out! Wondering what to do with that other slice of lime? I recommend putting it in a margarita.
